A few of my favorite things: Italian food, not having to wait for a table, and checking places off the endless Excel spreadsheet of restaurants I keep on my laptop.
The New York Times (which I not-so-secretly am in love with) suggested Rosemary’s, but wished its readers luck getting in to the very-popular West Village spot. I stopped by on a Wednesday night with a friend to catch up, and didn’t have to wait for even a second (Score!).
It’s known for its focaccia bread, which is confusingly placed in the center of the menu, with all sorts of other wonderful stuff scattered around it. The appetizers seem pricey until you order them, and they actually turn out to be substantial portions (Except for the cheese; that stuff is expensive. Still worth it though…)
See below: the restaurant’s famous focaccia bread generously dusted with (of course) rosemary, their aged Parmesan, a cup of shrimp with lemon and jalapeno, and the cup of calamari. And that was just for appetizer.
We both chose pasta for a main dish because we made our appetizer a meal in and of itself. My friend went with traditional linguine, while I selected the orecchiette with broccoli rabe, sausage, and chili peppers. Pretty standard, but hey, it was delicious, actual pasta that I didn’t microwave-boil in my dorm room, and it had other ingredients in it I probably would’ve majorly destroyed had I tried to cook them myself, so no arguments here.
The best part? Our check, after everything we consumed, was $35 for each of us. Steep only if you’re a poor college student, but a major win in terms of how much dinner usually costs per person in New York City. A rarity in Manhattan, Rosemary’s is quality and isn’t going to bankrupt you.
Too good to be true? Nope, I promise it’s not.
